ABOUT US
Serpom Thoesam Norling Monastery, situated in the Tibetan Settlement of Bylakuppe within Mysore District of Karnataka State, India, serves as a registered non-profit organization and a monastic university dedicated to advanced Buddhist studies. It prides itself on being an inclusive institution, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds without discrimination. Notably, Serpom achieved full-fledged monastery statues on April 25, 2008.
HOLIDAYS
The Monastery takes Tuesday as a weekly holiday because on that day a vegetable market opens in Kushalnagar town – eight kilometers from Serpom. Monks wash cloths, read books, and relax, and children play in the courtyard. There are two week-long holidays: Gaye and Nangchen holidays. During these breaks, young monks visit and spend time with their families.
TRIBUTE TO OUR PRECIOUS LAMAS
Geshe Tenzin Jampa (1923-2023)
Geshe Lobsang Yeshe
Geshe Ngawang Namgyal
Geshe Tenzin Drakpa
Geshe Dragpa Loden
Geshe Jinpa
These venerable senior monks serve as the bedrock of our spiritual community, like priceless gems. Their unwavering devotion, boundless labor, and numerous sacrifices over the years in service of the monastery stands as a testimony to their incredible commitment. They continue to guide us with their wisdom, and their legacy remains a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
Their journey began when the venerable monks initially settled in Buxa. Following a decade of dedicated spiritual pursuit, they relocated to Bylakupee, initially dwelling in humble tents. The state government allocated an acre of land to each monk for their sustenance, a lifeline. Furthermore, the government constructed housing facilities to provide a secure abode for these spiritual custodians. Thus, the support from the state government is overwhelming.
The year 1978 bore witness to a monumental achievement when the monks themselves erected the grand Assembly Hall of the monastery. Their contribution is immeasurable. Their benevolence and guidance are etched deeply in our collective memory, and their kindness remains unparalleled. It is through their enduring legacy that we find the strength to continue the noble work they initiated.
Regrettably, a substantial number of our esteemed senior monks have departed from this world. Acquiring photographs within a short time has proven to be a challenging endeavor. In homage to their timeless legacy and immeasurable contributions, we proudly present the sole group photograph we possess.
A Message From the Abbot
Greetings to all!
Above all, we pay tribute to the kindness and contribution of our venerable elder monks who, in 1978, established the sacred monastery here in South India. And their indelible legacy continues to inspire us. We take pride in the flourishing of our spiritual endeavors, and it is with profound joy that we witness the unwavering dedication and constructive contribution of our revered monks within their respective domains. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our cherished patrons, the Vajra brothers and sisters, and well-wishers across the globe, for your unwavering support and commitment to this sanctum where the seeds of liberation and enlightenment are sown. May you and your families bask in the radiance of good health, harmonious living, inner serenity, and boundless compassion!
With respect and regards,
Lharampa Jampa Khetsun
PRAYERS AND PUJA
At the request of patrons, the Monastery arranges pujas and offering ceremonies in the Assembly Hall. There are morning, lunch and dinner pujas, each lasting approximately two hours. Patrons distribute offerings in the form of ten rupees or any other amount they are willing to provide. This financial support serves as the primary source of income for our monks, enabling them to cover their expenses. Periodically, the monastery sponsors special pujas aimed at promoting peace and harmony in India and the world, as well as safeguarding against deathly epidemics. If you are interested in sponsoring any of these pujas, please contact our office.
FOOD FUND
Ever since its establishment, the monastery has been steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the provision of daily sustenance to 600s monks. The monastery serves as their singular nurturing parental figure and sanctuary. In essence, Serpom Monastery stands as the bedrock of their existence, as these devoted monks lack the means to independently sustain themselves.
